NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour
at Langley Speedway - Hampton, VA
Preview: Southern Mods return for Newport News Shipbuilding 150
Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 1) — Having survived last weekend’s encounter with Hurricane Irene, Langley Speedway braces for a whirlwind of a different sort this Saturday, Sept. 3, when the ground-pounding NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour hits town for the Newport News Shipbuilding 150, the ninth event on the series’ 14-race 2011 slate.
Along with the Southern Mods, Saturday’s feature lineup includes: KeesVacations.com Modifieds (BayPort Credit Union Twin 30s); Cycle City Corp. INEX Legends (25 laps); and, Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).
Front gates open at 2 p.m., just in time for fans to catch the end of the first Southern Modified practice round. Afternoon practice for the local divisions will sandwich the final practice for the touring Mods, which is scheduled for 2:55-3:25. Time trials get under way at 5:15. An autograph session with the Southern Modified stars begins at 6, leading right into pre-race ceremonies. The Champ Karts kick off the evening’s feature slate shortly after 7. The Newport News Shipbuilding 150 is scheduled for an 8 p.m. green flag.
As an added attraction, Zambelli Fireworks Internationale, which wowed the crowd on Fourth of July weekend, will present another pyrotechnic masterpiece. The display is scheduled to launch just after the INEX Legends feature, the fourth of the evening’s five races.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children, 6-12. Military personnel (active-duty or retired) and seniors (60+) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Advance tickets may be purchased in the Speedway office during normal business hours or through the track’s Web site — <www.langley-speedway.com>.

Third-generation driver George Brunnhoelzl III comes into the Newport News Shipbuilding 150 as the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour points leader. The 2009 series champ holds a healthy margin over second-ranked John Smith, 1,324-1,224. L.W. Miller, Jason Myers and Andy Seuss, who won last Friday at Caraway (N.C.) Speedway, round out the top five.
Frank Fleming, the top-finishing Southern Mod Tour driver in the Aug. 24 race at Bristol Motor Speedway, is sixth in the points rundown, followed by Tim Brown, who won at Langley last season. Austin Pack and 2010 series champ Burt Myers are eighth and ninth, respectively.
Thomas Stinson, who battled Shawn Balluzzo for the Langley Modified crown in 2010, is 10th in the standings. He has started five of the eight Southern Modified races this year, scoring three top-five and four top-10 finishes.
Looking forward to a good outing in last season’s Visit Hampton 150 at Langley, Stinson was, instead, relegated to the sidelines when technical issues cropped up during the pre-race inspection. That disappointment should give him extra incentive for this Saturday’s race.

Daniel Hemric, a rookie contender on the 2011 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, is no stranger to Langley Speedway. He competed in last year’s INEX Legends Asphalt Nationals, posting a heat race win and starting on the pole for the Pro Division championship tilt.

With Hurricane Irene wreaking havoc along the Eastern Seaboard last weekend, there was little change at the top of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national standings. Philip Morris remains three points ahead of Keith Rocco, while Lee Pulliam and Langley Late Model leader C.E. Falk are third and fourth.
According to the NASCAR press release that accompanied this week’s standings, Rocco’s chances for a second straight national title may have taken a hit last weekend when he was involved in a last-lap wreck at Stafford (Conn.) Speedway. The incident dropped him from a potential third-place finish to 18th and earned him a one-week vacation from Stafford for rough driving.
Other Langley regulars in the national top 100 include brothers Greg Edwards (18th) and Danny Edwards Jr. (76th).
The Virginia state standings were unchanged from last week with Morris, Pulliam and Falk continuing to hold the top three spots. Greg Edwards is sixth in the state, while Danny Edwards Jr. is 12th.

In the KeesVacations.com Modified division, Shawn Balluzzo enters Saturday’s Twins with a commanding 60-point lead over Chris Johnson, 764-704. Balluzzo also ranked fourth nationally in Division II of last week’s NASCAR Finalist Program standings, which recognizes top performers in support classes at local NASCAR-sanctioned tracks. This week’s Finalist Program standings are due out on Friday.
• • •
Saturday’s program at Langley marks a return to action for the INEX Legends and the Pro Winged Champ Karts. Thanks to a couple bouts of inclement weather in August, both divisions have been idle since July 30.
Brad Hancock holds a 30-point lead over Steve Keesee, 370-340, in the INEX Legends standings, while Tommy Sweeney is two ahead of Chris O’Brien, 232-230, in the Champ Kart rundown.

Langley Speedway will be silent on Saturday, Sept. 10, as the local racing fraternity heads up I-64 for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series activities at Richmond International Raceway.
NASCAR action resumes at Langley on Saturday, Sept. 17, with Rolls Royce Naval Marine Night. Headlining that evening’s program are the season’s final events for the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
To learn more about Langley Speedway, fans may call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or consult the track’s Web site — www.langley-speedway.com.
