Hurricane Irene swept through North Carolina early Saturday, but the rest of the weekend’s sweeping would be left to one of the Orange County Speedway track regulars.

A late start thanks to hurricane-related passing showers saw Brian Cole and Joey Throckmorton starting on the front row for the first of two Late Model Select races.  Throckmorton would take the early advantage, using OCS’s generous high groove to get past the Roxboro naitive.  Early cautions would give Cole repeated chances to get past Throckmorton, but on each restart Throckmorton would regain the advantage.  A Lap 31 caution for a Mason Hudson spin would give Cole one last shot at Throckmorton, but Throckmorton would hold off the former Limited Sportsman champion.  Rain came back on Lap 40, and the combination of cool temperatures and humid air made it impossible to dry the track in a timely manner.  Throckmorton would be declared the winner of the rain-shortened race, with Cole, Kyle Appel, Brandon Baker and Ryan Reed rounding out the top five.  The rest of the event would be completed on Sunday.

Sunday afternoon’s weather was an entirely different beast.  The cool, cloudy Saturday evening gave way to a beautiful, sunbathed Sunday afternoon.  The field of 18 Late Model  Selects would see very different track conditions for their second race, with Brandon Baker leading the field to the green flag.  Baker would quickly give way to Throckmorton, who would once again slowly pull away from the field.  This time Terry Dease would be the driver looking to foil Throckmorton’s race.   Dease would rally from a last-place starting position to take over the lead on Lap 42.  A Lap 44 caution would see Dease spin, giving Throckmorton the lead back.  Throckmorton wouldn’t look back, taking the sweep and the points lead.  Brian Cole would cross second, with Chuck Lawson, Ryan Reed and Mike Chambers finishing out the top five.

With his two wins, Joey Throckmorton takes over the OCS Late Model Select point lead. Brian Cole is second, 14 points out, with Brandon Baker, Kyle Appel and Tracey Chambers finishing out the top five, all within 40 points of Throckmorton.

With a smaller field, and rain coming Saturday night, the Limited Sportsman division drew for starting position, giving Jerry Hinesley Sunday afternoon’s pole position.  Andrew Perry would work his way through the field, seemingly ready to challenge Hinesley for the lead when his engine let go on Lap 29, bringing out the caution for one last sprint to the finish.  Dennis Sargent would chase Hinesley, but Hinesley was too strong, leading from wire to wire and winning the afternoon event.  Sargent would cross the line second, with Daniel Schadt, Robert Stevens and Harold Summey rounding out the top five.

Schadt adds six points to his point lead, now 16 over Dennis Sargent.  Keith Edwards did not make the trip to OCS this week, and falls from second to third, 56 points out.

Kenny Mills Jr. sat on the pole for the Sunday afternoon Pure Stock event, with teammates and championship contenders Matt Grimes and Les Aliff surrounding him.  Grimes would go to the lead early, holding off repeated attacks by Aliff.  Daniel Moss would make a late charge, but a Lap 22 spin would cost him both the lead and the shot at victory.  Les Aliff would take advantage, taking the lead on the restart and holding off late-charger Chris Crosby to win.  Crosby would finish second, with Grimes third, Mike Conner fourth and Mills fifth.

Aliff’s win, combined with Grimes’s third place finish brings Aliff within one point of Grimes.  Daniel Moss is third, 43 points back, while Mike Conner and James Perry sit fourth and fifth.

Sunday’s racing would see the best Super Mini Truck field of the season, with nine trucks taking the green flag.   Ray Chriscoe would take the early lead, holding it through the halfway mark until a Lap 13 restart would see point leader Chris Henderson make a move for the lead.  Henderson would leave Ray and Junior Chriscoe to battle for second behind him while pulling away from the field.  A late Ray Chriscoe spin would give Junior Chriscoe one final attempt to make it past Henderson, but it would be too little too late, as Chris Henderson took his fourth win in five starts.  Junior Chriscoe would finish second, with Toney Henderson, Ray Chriscoe and David Wenhart rounding out the top five.

Chris Henderson adds to his point lead with his win, now 12 points ahead of Toney Henderson.  Quain Moore, Wesley Martin and David Wenhart round out the top five.

Racing returns to Orange County Speedway Saturday, September 17, with a full night of action featuring 75 laps from the Late Model Selects.  Also scheduled are the Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock, Super Mini Truck, Street Stock, Southern Ground Pounder, Legends and Bandolero divisions.  Tickets are just $10 for adults, with students, college faculty and staff, seniors and military all $8 with valid ID.  Kids 10 and under are just $1.  For more information call the track office at (336) 364-1222 or go to www.ocstrack.com
