OCS Track Championships Are Still Up For Grabs

In a regular racing season, by the time August comes around there are only a few real challengers left for track championships throughout the country. With a late start to the season, the Orange County Speedway season has just now hit halfway, and most championships are still up for grabs.

The racing has been so close and unpredictable this season that the top ten in points are separated by no more than 20 points. The division has yet to see a repeat winner, with Kyle Appel, Terry Dease, Joey Throckmorton and Taylor Doggett all finding victory lane. Of those drivers, Appel is the only one in the top three, with Tracey Chambers and Daryl Carver second and third in points, just two and four points out respectively. Chambers has managed to get within one track position of the point lead while scoring finishes no better than fifth, but no worse than seventh. Carver has one finish outside the top 10, but three fourth place finishes puts him right back in the chase. Dease, Throckmorton, Andrew Perry, Brian Cole, Jason White, Brandon Baker and Mason Hudson round out the top ten.

Limited Sportsman division leader Daniel Schadt holds ten points over Keith Edwards, despite having not found victory lane yet in 2011. Edwards sits just eight points ahead of Dennis Sargent, who is looking to return to form after a rough outing last Saturday evening. The two other winners in 2011 are Donald Brace and Jerry Hinesley, they sit fourth and fifth in points, respectively.

In previous years, the OCS Pure Stock division has been dominated by Nissan 240s. This season, however, it’s two Hondas sitting atop the leaderboard. Teammates Matt Grimes and Les Aliff are separated by three points, having split four of the first five wins between them. Aliff’s three wins beat Grimes’s one, however a fourth place finish and lack of bonus points put Aliff behind Grimes. Daniel Moss, the season’s other winner, sits third. One DNF on the season for Moss puts him 29 points back, but still within shouting distance of Grimes and Aliff.

Gary Ledbetter and Chris Henderson have dominated their divisions, with Ledbetter taking four of five wins in Street Stock action, while Henderson has won all but one Super Mini-Truck event.

These point chases will be settled over the coming weeks, with action returning to Orange County Speedway Saturday, August 13. July 30’s Late Model Select date will be made up as part of a Twin 50 Lap event for the LMS division. Also in action will be the Limited Sportsman, Street Stock and Super Mini-Truck divisions. If you have a grandstand ticket from the July 30 event, it will be honored at the front gate for August 13’s race. If you do not, tickets are just $10 for adults, $8 for kids 11-17 and 10 and under just a dollar. Seniors, university students, faculty & staff, police, and firefighters are all just $8 with valid ID. For more information, call the track office at (336) 364-1222 or visit OCS on the web at www.ocstrack.com.
