South Boston, Va --

The battles for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series national championship and the Virginia state crown are heating up and South Boston Speedway will play a key role in determining who will win both titles.

As the NASCAR Whelen All American Series points season heads to a close next month, the title chases on the national level and in the state of Virginia are heating up.

Philip Morris, a 14-time winner this season at America’s Hometown Track, is seeking to claim another South Boston Speedway championship trophy and a fourth NASCAR Whelen All American Series national championship.

Morris is currently third in the national title standings, but is only 24 points behind defending national champion Keith Rocco and only two points behind Lee Pulliam, who has also competed some at South Boston Speedway in 2011.

While Morris trails Pulliam in the national title standings, he leads him in the battle for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Virginia state title. Morris is first in the Virginia standings and is followed by C.E. Falk III in second and Pulliam in third.

Morris will be bidding for a 15th triumph at South Boston Speedway on Saturday night when the green flag waves for the start of the Sunoco Late Model 150. Five races are scheduled Saturday night with the first event slated to begin at 7 p.m.

The NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division will highlight the evening of racing with a 150-lap shootout.

The Limited Sportsman Division will also be in action Saturday night and the Budweiser Pure Stock Division drivers will compete in twin races. Rounding out the night of racing will be an event for the Southern Vintage Modifieds.

Morris owns a 146-point advantage over female competitor Natalie Sather in the chase for the 2011 South Boston Speedway championship. Dennis Holdren is third in the standings and is followed in the top five by Matt Bowling and Josh Oakley.

Danny Willis Jr. will enter the 50-lap event for the Limited Sportsman drivers with a slim three-point lead over Brian Pembelton. Justin Snow, the divisions defending champion, is third in the points chase, but is only six points ahead of Bobby McCarty.

Joe Allred is 31 points ahead of Trey Crews entering the twin races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division Saturday night. Stuart Crews is third in the division standings and is only one point ahead of fourth-place Randy Hupp.

Darryl Lacks has an 11-point lead over Daryl Gwynn in the chase for the 2011 Southern Vintage Modifieds championship. Donnie Lacks is third and trails Gwynn by only six points.

Pit registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Practice for all divisions will be held from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and admission will be $10 for adults and children six and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.
