Preview: Late Models return in Twin 50s
Wednesday, July 20, 2011

HAMPTON, Va. (July 20) — The Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars return to action in a pair of 50-lap features this Saturday, July 23, as Langley Speedway continues its 2011 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series campaign with Larry King Law Night.
In addition to the Late Model doubleheader, Saturday’s lineup includes: Heritage Motor Co. Super Streets (40 laps); Larry King Law Super Trucks (25 laps); EZ Auto of Newport News UCARs (30 laps); and, Standard Welding Pro Sixes (30 laps).
Front gates open and afternoon practice begins at 2 p.m. A drivers meeting is scheduled for 4:15, followed by time trials at 4:30. Pre-race ceremonies get under way at 6:55 and the first green flag goes in the air shortly after 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. Military personnel (active-duty or retired) and seniors (60+) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Family Packs, which include two adult and two kids tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.
Advance tickets may be purchased in the Speedway office during normal business hours or through the track’s Web site — <www.langley-speedway.com>.

While the Late Model division enjoyed a night off from Langley last weekend, several regulars headed west to South Boston Speedway for a 150-lap event.
Battling to stay in the national title hunt, C.E. Falk led the local contingent with a fourth-place finish. Brothers Kyle and Matt Waltz were sixth and ninth, respectively. Doug Godsey and Wes Falk made early exits from the race, ending up 14th and 18th. By lap 12, seven of the 20 starters had been chased to the sidelines.
Three-time national champ Philip Morris picked up his 12th win in the event to keep pace with Lee Pulliam, who won at Motor Mile Speedway.

With his fourth-place outing at SoBo, Falk held onto the fourth spot in this week’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Top 500. Connecticut Modified ace Keith Rocco posted two wins last weekend and reclaimed first place in the national rundown. Pulliam and Morris are second and third.
Other Langley stalwarts in the Top 500 include: Greg Edwards (46th), Danny Edwards Jr. (80th), Paul Debolt (120th), Dean Shiflett (130th), Doug Godsey (134th), Mark Wertz (154th), Jeff Shiflett (203rd), Terry Carroll (222nd), Kyle Waltz (256th), Wes Falk (260th), Matt Waltz (319th), Shayne Lockhart (345th), Renno Marchetti IV (406th), Casey Wyatt (457th) and Brandon Gdovic (472nd).
In the Virginia state standings, Falk ranks third behind Pulliam and Morris. Greg Edwards is eighth, while Danny Edwards Jr. checks in at 15th.

Speaking of Brandon Gdovic, he notched his first career top-five finish in last week’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at the “Magic Mile” in Loudon, N.H., coming home in fourth. Max Gresham, who enjoyed a strong run when the series visited Langley in June, picked up his second win of the season in the event.

With nine events in the books, the tussle for the 2011 Langley Late Model crown is shaping up into a two-horse race between C.E. Falk and Greg Edwards. Falk currently holds an eight-point edge in the standings, 440-432. Danny Edwards Jr. is third, 54 points behind the leader.
• • •
In the Super Street division, three-time winner Ritchie German is 18 points ahead of Ryan Nester, 240-222. Third-place Sean Calway trails Nester by 10.
• • •
Tommy Nixon will be gunning for his fifth victory in the Super Truck race. He holds a commanding 26-point lead, 296-270, over defending division champ Robbie Davis. Troy Turnage is third, only two points behind Davis.
• • •
Landon Florian goes for his sixth win in Saturday’s UCAR feature. After a 22nd-place nightmare on June 25, he rebounded in the division’s last race, on July 9, waxing the field by over seven seconds. He leads Sammy Gaita by 22 in the current points rundown, 258-236.
• • •
In the Pro Six class, rookie contender Steve Williams will look to follow up his first series victory. Meanwhile, Doug Warren took advantage of Casey Sipe’s misfortune in the hard-hitting July 9 event and regained the points lead, 276-270.
• • •
A jam-packed, eight-race card is slated for Saturday, July 30, when Langley Speedway plays host to St. Leo University Night. Twin features are scheduled for the Late Models and the KeesVacations.com Modifieds. The Pepsi Grand Stocks, Cycle City Corp. INEX Legends, CBX Modular Homes INEX Bandoleros and Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts will also see action.
The Legends and Bandolero races will be national qualifying events with drivers looking to earn bids to their respective national meets.
