Kyle Appel Takes First Win of 2011

Three weeks ago, Kyle Appel thought he had his first win of 2011 all wrapped up, dominating the better part of the 75 lap event. A late caution gave Joey Throckmorton one final shot at overtaking the Durham driver, and Throckmorton did just that, leaving Appel to wonder when his turn would be.

Fast forward to Saturday Night’s event: Appel would take the pole, edging Craig Moore by six thousandths of a second. Early on, it seemed that there wouldn’t be a chance for anyone to pull away, with five cautions in the first 31 laps slowing up the pace. Included in these cautions were the point leader Terry Dease, and second in points Brian Cole, with both having to end their night early.

The Lap 31 restart saw a brief challenge from Moore, as he tried to keep pace with Appel. Behind them, Daryl Carver, Joey Throckmorton and Brandon Baker put on a show, bumping and rubbing for third. Carver and Baker would both eventually fade, giving Throckmorton a clear shot at Moore and Appel. Unlike June 25, though, there’d be no late caution, and Appel would find himself cruising to victory. Moore would cruise home in second, with Throckmorton holding back Carver for third. Carver finishes fourth, and Andrew Perry overcomes a Lap 25 spin for fifth.

“I told my crew that if we kept coming back and running well, we’d get us one”, Appel said of his win, making him the fourth winner in four races at Orange County Speedway.

Donald Brace and Jerry Hinesley had it out in Limited Sportsman racing, with Hinesley repeatedly taking the lead early on the restart, only to see Brace slip by back after four or five laps. A late caution involving Dennis Sargent, Hinesley, Keith Edwards, Chris Carroll and others gave Daniel Schadt a five-lap shot at Brace. The racing would be hard on the restart, with Schadt putting the nose of his machine underneath the bumper of Brace repeatedly, but Brace would hold Schadt back, winning the 35 lap event. Schadt maintains his points lead by finishing second, while Keith Edwards overcomes the late wreck by finishing third.

Last week, Les Aliff chose to stick with his tried and true Honda Civic, instead of making the move to his newer Honda Prelude, and had a fifth place finish to show for it. Saturday evening, Aliff made the switch and had what could be considered at perfect race. In what was one of many caution-free races throughout the evening, Aliff took advantage of a poor start by pole-sitter and point leader Matt Grimes, slipping by he and Daniel Moss in the first two turns. From there, Grimes, Moss and Mike Conner were forced to fend for themselves, as Aliff walked away with his second win of 2011. Grimes would ease his way into a second place finish, while Mike Conner and Daniel Moss beat and banged to a third and four place finish respectively. Jarrett Milam, the 2010 Pure Stock track champion, would finish fifth.

Chris Henderson has dominated the Super Mini-Truck division this season, but Saturday night it would be a different Henderson in victory lane. Chris Henderson would start on the pole and pull away early, leaving Toney Henderson to give chase. Late in the 20 lap event, as Toney Henderson was closing in, Chris Henderson would have something let go underneath his truck, leading to a black flag by race control. Toney Henderson would, in turn, win his first race of 2011, while Wesley Martin and Quain Moore finished second and third. In Street Stock action, Chris Gray would put his Camaro on the pole, but Gary Ledbetter would slip by, edging Gray to win his third race in four tries. Keith Maready would hold off a late Cory Purnell charge in the Southern Ground Pounder division, while Tyler Hill continued his Allison Legacy Series domination, passing John Nemechek late for his seventh win.

Racing returns July 30 to Orange County Speedway with another full night of action, featuring 75 laps from the Late Model Selects. Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock, Street Stock and the Super Mini-Trucks will all return to the 3/8 mile oval as well. Tickets are just $10 for adults, with students, seniors, military, college faculty, staff and students, as well as fire and police personnel all just $8 with a valid ID. Kids 10 and under are just a buck! For more information, call the track office at (336) 364-1222 or surf to www.ocstrack.com.
