South Boston Speedway News
Sizzling temperatures will be replaced with hot NASCAR racing Saturday night at SoBo

South Boston, Va --

The temperatures are sizzling this week and the forecast is calling for hot racing Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

With the thermometer soaring toward the 100-degree mark early this week, area race fans are likely waiting patiently for the weekend when NASCAR Whelen All American Series racing action is set to return to America’s Hometown Track.

After a one-week hiatus, South Boston Speedway will host the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model 150 Saturday, July 16. The first of five races planned for the evening will get cranked up at 7 p.m.

As an added bonus, the advance weather forecast for Saturday calls for cooler temperatures with a high of 86 and a mild low of 67 degrees Saturday night.

The featured attraction of the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model 150 will be a 150-lap race for the competitors in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.

The Limited Sportsman Division will also be in action Saturday night and the Budweiser Pure Stock Division will hit the four-tenths mile asphalt for a pair of races. Also scheduled Saturday night is an event for the Southern Vintage Modifieds.

Philip Morris will try to maintain his dominance in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division this weekend. Morris, a three-time NASCAR Whelen All American national champion, has reeled off 11 wins at South Boston Speedway this season, including an impressive nine-win streak earlier in the campaign.

Morris owns a 115-point advantage over female driver Natalie Sather in the race for the 2011 track championship at America’s Hometown Track. Josh Oakley is third in the standings and is followed in the fourth spot by Dennis Holdren and in fifth place by two-time defending track champion Justin Johnson.

Heading into Saturday night’s Limited Sportsman Division shootout, Danny Willis Jr. and Brian Pembelton are currently tied for first in the standings. The two lead third-place Justin Snow, the division’s defending champion, while Bobby McCarty is fourth and is only seven points behind Snow.

In the battle for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division standings, Trey Crews leads the way by 14 points over Joe Allred. Randy Hupp is third, while Stuart Crews is fourth and is only two points ahead of fifth-place Jake Brown.

Darryl Lacks owns a slim one-point lead over Daryl Gwynn in the Southern Vintage Modified standings, while Donnie Lacks sits in third place.

Pit registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Practice for all divisions will be held from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and admission will be $10 for adults and children six and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.

For more information visit the track's website or phone the track at (434) 572-4947 or toll free at 1-877-440-1540.
