Consistency Takes Brian Cole to OCS Point Lead

After two months of nature’s intervention at Orange County Speedway, the 2011 racing season is finally underway. Back to back outstanding races in the Late Model Select division has seen two “expected” winners in Terry Dease and Joey Throckmorton, but it’s Brian Cole leading the way in the 2011 points chase.



With Throckmorton falling out of contention in the season opener, and Dease spinning late in round two, Cole’s second and third place finishes have propelled him to the top spot. The former Limited Sportsman champion has a logjam of drivers behind him, with last week’s runner up Kyle Appel, last week’s winner Joey Throckmorton, surprise story Ricky Jones and 2010 Late Model Stock champion Terry Dease stacked up in the top five behind him. Currently 20 points separates Cole from eighth place Brandon Baker.



In the first two races, Cole has repeatedly faded back in the field, at times almost falling out of the top 10, but each time has rallied back for a podium finish. “We don’t have the car where it needs to be”, said Cole of his performances thus far, but late race rallies and some luck have given the Roxboro driver the points lead coming into the July 9 night of racing.



It’s a similar story in Limited Sportsman racing, where someone without a win is leading the points tally. Daniel Schadt led the bulk of laps last week, but Keith Edwards was able to slip by in the late-goings to take the win. Schadt, with his two second place finishes, has a four point lead over Edwards and a five point lead over both Dennis Sargent and Jerry Hinesley.



In the Pure Stock ranks, teammates Matt Grimes and Les Aliff sit in the top two seats, with Grimes only leading thanks to bonus points. In week one, Grimes edged a hard-charging Aliff, while in week two Aliff snuck by late, snatching a win from Grimes but securing the team’s second 1-2 finish on the season. The third place driver in both events, Mike Conner, sits third in points, a mere 11 out.



Racing returns to Orange County Speedway on Saturday, July 9, with a full night of action. The Late Model Select division will take to Rougemont’s high banks for 75 laps, with Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock, Street Stock, Super Mini Trucks, Southern Ground Pounders, Legends and Bandoleros all in action as well. Tickets are just $10 for adults, with students, college faculty and staff, military personnel, law enforcement and fire department all $8 with valid id. Youth 10 and under are just $1.
