Pulliam claims $5,000 check with victory in FindItHere.com NASCAR Whelen Late Model 200

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — Lee Pulliam had knocked on the door of Victory Lane at South Boston Speedway most of the season, but was always denied by Philip Morris.

Pulliam was in perfect position to take advantage of Morris’ blown engine in the second half of the race and held off the challenges of Kenny Forbes and Eddie Johnson to win Friday night’s FindItHere.com NASCAR Whelen Late Model 200 at South Boston Speedway.

Pulliam, a Semora, N.C., native, notched his first victory of the season at the 0.4-mile oval and picked up his 11th overall win of the year.

The race was extended to 202 laps after the final caution period was extended when Brandon Butler, who was running in second place at the time, had a fuel pickup issue. That allowed Johnson, of Midlothian, Va., to restart on the outside and hold on for the position, finishing 0.265 seconds behind Pulliam.

Dustin Storm, of Huntingtown, Md., finished third just ahead of Kelly Kingery of Wirtz, Va. Forbes, who led a total of 15 laps and is a Bullock, N.C., native, finished fifth.

Morris, who entered the race as the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national points leader, led 124 of the first 125 laps before his engine expired on Lap 126. The Ruckersville, Va., native finished a season-worst 21st but still maintains a healthy points lead at the track ahead of Natalie Sather.

The race featured 10 lead changes and six of those were between Pulliam and Forbes over a 20-lap stretch between Laps 142 and 160.

Pulliam averaged 58.659 mph in a race that was slowed by five cautions for 41 laps. The caution period following Morris’ engine failure resulted in the race’s lone red flag.

McCarty picks up first Limited Sportsman victory

Bobby McCarty picked the perfect night to claim his first Limited Sportsman victory, leading 92 of the race’s 104 laps to win Friday evening.

McCarty, of Summerfield, N.C., held off track points leader Brian Pembelton by 0.175 seconds in a green-white-checkered finish. The two drivers were the only ones to lead in the race. Pembelton, an Amelia, Va., native, relinquished the lead to McCarty on Lap 57.

Danny Willis Jr., of South Boston, Va., finished third ahead of Austin Thaxton, of Cluster Springs, Va. Blake Stallings, a Danville, Va., native, finished fifth.

McCarty averaged 57.917 mph in the race, which was slowed 25 laps during four caution periods.

Allred leads wire-to-wire to claim Pure Stock race

Joe Allred III, of Scottsburg, Va., led wire-to-wire and held off the charging Bruce Mayo to win the 50-lap Budweiser Pure Stock race.

Mayo, of Halifax, Va., finished 0.982 seconds behind Allred after the race’s final caution on Lap 41.

The final caution included a red flag period following a five-car accident in Turn 3 involving points leader Trey Crews.

Jake Brown, of South Boston, Va., and Libby Privette, of Nathalie, Va., finished third and fourth, respectively. Eric Crews, of Long Island, Va., finished fifth.

Allred averaged 27.373 mph in claming his series-leading fifth victory of the season. The race was slowed four times for cautions.

Next Race at South Boston Speedway

NASCAR racing action will return to South Boston Speedway Saturday night, July 16 with racing in four divisions, including a 150-lap race for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division.

A 50-lap race for the Limited Sportsman Division also is on tap, in addition to twin 30-lap races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, and a 25-lap race for the Southern Vintage Modifieds.

Practice will go from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. Qualifying time trials will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the first race will start at 7 p.m.

Admission will be $10 for adults and $5 for youths ages 7-12 when accompanied by a paying adult. Kids ages six and under are free with a paid adult.

For additional information about the July 16 racing program or any other events phone the track at (434) 572-4947 or toll free at 1-877-440-1540.
