Kyle Appel dominated the first 74 laps at Orange County Speedway, leading all but five circuits around the 3/8 mile speedway. In the end, a late caution and one small slip-up cost him the win.

Appel would out-qualify 19 other Late Model Selects and sit on the pole for the night’s 75 lap feature event, with Joey Throckmorton starting to his outside. Early on, it was clear Appel was the man to beat, leading the first 39 laps, until a Quin Houff spin off Turn 2 would bring out the caution and regroup the field. Throckmorton took advantage on the restart, using the track’s generous high groove to take the lead. Appel would charge right back, though, taking the lead back on Lap 44. Throckmorton would slowly drop back to fourth, while Ricky Jones and Terry Dease battled for second behind Appel.

Appel appeared to have the race all but wrapped up, until Jones and Dease got together off Turn 2 on the white flag lap, bringing out the caution for the final time of the night. With Dease and Jones out of the way, Throckmorton was given one more shot at Appel with a green-white-checkered finish. Much like the Lap 39 restart, Throckmorton jumped out by a nose, only to find Appel side-by-side with him taking the white flag. Appel and Throckmorton would drag race down the back stretch, and Appel had the edge through Turns 3 and 4, but slipped up just enough to let Throckmorton back to his outside, with Throckmorton taking the checkered flag the line two one thousandths of a second ahead of Appel. Brian Cole would finish third, scoring his second consecutive top-three finish, with Brandon Baker and Andrew Perry rounding out the top five.

“I can’t even breathe!” said Throckmorton of the win. “Kyle had the best car, he should have won…but we’ll take it”. The win is Throckmorton’s first on the season.

Three former Grand Stock drivers would start up front in the second Limited Sportsman race of 2011, with Dennis Sargent setting the quick qualifying time, but early on Daniel Schadt appeared to be the man to beat. Schadt would lead a pack of cars including 2010 Grand Stock champion Keith Edwards, Sargent and week 1 winner Jerry Hinesley for the first 27 circuits of the 35 lap event until slower traffic intervened. While trying to work around the slower Eric Ellington machine, Schadt slowed up, allowing Edwards to slip by on the inside of Turn 4. A late Donald Brace spin would bunch the field back up, but Schadt could not take advantage, and Edwards would find himself returning to winning form. Schadt would settle for second, with Dennis Sargent holding back Bill Barber for third.

Teammates Matt Grimes and Les Aliff continued their 1-2 domination of the Pure Stock division, though this time it was Aliff playing the role of spoiler. Aliff would set the fast qualifying time and lead the first eight laps until a Chase Sandefur incident would bring out the only caution of the 25 lap event. The restart would give Matt Grimes an opening, and Grimes would take advantage, pulling out to a five car-length lead. Aliff would slowly pull Grimes back to him, and on Lap 22 Aliff would make his move, passing Grimes off Turn 2 and taking the lead for good. Les Aliff would come across as the winner, with Grimes finishing second and Mike Conner taking his second third-place finish of the young season.

The Southern Ground Pounders made their first trip to the high banks of Orange County Speedway for 2011, and it was an eventful 10 laps of racing. The race, originally scheduled for 25 laps, saw two hard wrecks for a division that normally runs relatively caution-free. A Lap 6 incident between Cory Agee and James Turner would send Turner into the inside retaining barrier hard, destroying his Sportsman machine, and a heavy hit on the restart lap would end Thomas Clayton’s night early. In the end, Cory Purnell would outlast Mark Tatum on the track, while Cory Agee would get credit for third.

In Street Stock action, Gary Ledbetter would hold off a late attack by Chris Gray to win his first race of 2011, while Chris Henderson fought off Toney Henderson and Quain Moore in Super Mini-Truck action. In a Legends double-header, Ryan Shattuck would win the first half, while Jake Spillers would take the second, and Tate Fogleman would take both sides of a Bandolero division double-header.

Racing returns to Rougemont’s Orange County Speedway July 9th with another action-packed lineup. In action will be the Late Model Select division for 75 laps, as well as the Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock, Street Stock, Super Mini-Trucks, Southern Ground Pounders, Legends and Bandoleros. Tickets are just $10 for adults, with students, seniors, military, law enforcement, fire department and college faculty, staff and students all just $8 with a valid id. Kids 10 and under are just a buck! For more information call the track office at (336) 364-1222 or surf to http://www.ocstrack.com.
