June 6, 2011 -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

For the first time in 2011, mother nature cooperated on a race night, allowing the PASS South series to roll into Orange County Speedway with their unique brand of racing action.  With five races on the schedule, fans were promised some excitement, and that’s exactly what they received.

The big race of the evening was PASS South Orange Blossom 125.  In qualifying, Andy Loden would set a track record with a speed of 98.8 miles per hour.  Loden would redraw fifth, with Jimmy Weller drawing the race’s top starting position and Heath Hindman redrawing second.

Early on Hindman used the OCS high groove to his advantage, quickly pulling away from Weller.  As would be repeated throughout the night, Weller would come back, retaking the lead on Lap 3, just in time for the caution flag to fly for the first of 12 times.  Repeatedly, Weller would get a poor start, allowing Hindman to take the lead, only to take it back a few laps later.  This would repeat until a Lap 66 caution for Brandon Ward’s single-car spin put Justin Wakefield to the outside of Weller.

Wakefield would look strong throughout the mid-stages of the race, pulling away from Heath Hindman, Jimmy Weller, Roger Lee Newton and Jay Fogleman as they battled for position behind him.  Wakefield’s night would be cut short after a brush with the wall left his machine battered and broken, and finished on Lap 106.

Roger Lee Newton would spend the final 19 laps trying to fight off a rejuvenated Jimmy Weller.   A Lap 119 caution would eliminate many of the race contenders, including Preston Peltier, Andy Ldoen, Jay Fogleman, Heath Hindman and Bradley McCaskill, leaving the race between Weller and Newton.

One final caution for Ryan Blaney’s broken machine gave Weller one more attempt at denying Newton his first ever PASS South victory.  Weller would pull ahead on the restart, but Newton wouldn’t be denied, passing Weller back coming to the white flag and not looking back.  Newton would take the checkered flag, Weller would have to settle for second, with Preston Peltier, Brandon Ward, Jordan Armstrong and Alex Fleming rounding out the top six.

In CCS Late Model Sportsman, Reid Wilson would be declared the winner of the shortened event.  Cole Timm would take the pole and lead the race until spinning on Lap 15.  After a restart and 10 laps of work, Timm caught the bumper of leader Justin Carroll, spinning Carroll off turn 4 and leaving Madison Whittle nowhere to go.  Whittle would make hard contact with Carroll, causing Carroll’s car to burst into flames.  Both Carroll and Whittle would be okay, with the Orange County Speedway safety crew taking immediate action to get both the fire put out and Carroll pulled from his flaming machine.

Timm would be penalized for rough driving, moving him back to third and giving the win to Reid Wilson, with Houston Smith finishing second and Timm receiving credit for third.

Four classes of Legends machines took to the high banks of Orange County Speedway, with the Young Lions division racing apart from the multi-class Pro, Semi-Pro and Masters division race.  Both were scheduled for 20 laps.

In the Pro/Semi-Pro/Masters division race, multiple cautions would cause the race to be shortened to 16 laps.  Bayley Currey and Tanner Berryhill would start on the front row, and it appeared as though Currey would have Berryhill in his mirror for the majority of the evening. Instead, Berryhill would make contact with former NASCAR Truck Series driver Keven Wood, sending both drivers around, and ending Berryhill’s night early.  Alex Pacheco would bring out the second caution with an engine fire ending his race on Lap 7.  Bayley Currey would dominate the remainder of the race, pulling away from John Hillicker and Zac Little to win the Pro division.  Lee Jordan would take Semi-Pro honors, with Jamie Laine receiving the Master’s trophy.

The Young Lions Legends race would see Josh Morris lead from wire to wire, keeping Luke Demis at bay despite two cautions for spinning Legends machines. Jake Spillers would finish third.  In Bandoleros action, Tate Fogleman would win from the pole, beating out Brayton Haws and Jonnie Varga for top honors.

Racing action returns to the high banks of Orange County Speedway this coming Saturday night with the Turn 4 Tavern 222.  The night’s racing will see 75 laps for the Late Model Select division, with Limiteds, Pure Stocks, Street Stocks, Super Mini Stocks, Legends and Bandoleros also in action.  Tickets are just $10, with students, seniors, and military personnel all $8 (with valid ID).
