Morris Fends Off Bounty Hunters

South Boston, Va.…….An all-star cast of “bounty hunters” converged on South Boston Speedway Saturday night to try to snap Philip Morris’ lengthy seven-race winning streak.

The cast included Lee Pulliam, C.E. Falk III, two-time and defending South Boston Speedway NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division Champion Justin Johnson, former NASCAR national champion Peyton Sellers, Nick Smith and Tim George Jr., who has experience competing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

None of them or any others in the 25-car field succeeded.

Morris swept both of the 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division races that served as the feature event of Saturday night’s Italian Delight Family Restaurant Twin Late Model 75s racing program.

Pulliam, from Semora, N.C., finished second in both races and Falk, from Virginia Beach, Va. finished third in both races.

Pulliam trailed Morris by 1.913 seconds in the first 75-lap race, which had a 36-lap green-flag dash to the finish that followed the last of the race’s pair of caution flags.

In the nightcap, Pulliam trailed Morris by 1.116 second after another 36-lap dash to the finish.

The pair of wins upped Morris’ win streak to nine in a row. He has now won nine of the season’s first 10 NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division races here at South Boston Speedway.

As a result of Morris’ two wins, South Boston Speedway officials have increased the bounty on Morris to $2,000 for the CenturyLink Late Model 150 racing program next Saturday night, June 4.

If a driver can snap Morris’ win streak next week, he or she can take home a total of $5,000 for his or her night’s work.

Natalie Sather of Fargo, N.D. finished fourth in the first 75-lap race with Johnson, from Durham, N.C. rounding out the top five in the opening race.

Johnson came back to finish fourth in the nightcap with Sather taking fifth place. Dennis Holdren of Roanoke, Va. finished sixth in both races.

Morris averaged 58.770 mph in winning the first race and averaged 74.241 mph in winning the nightcap.

            Pembelton Takes Limited Sportsman Win

Brian Pembelton of Amelia, Va. picked up his third win of the season Saturday night with his victory in the 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.

Pembelton started on the pole and led the entire race, edging Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. by .429-second in a three-lap green-flag sprint to the finish that followed the last of the race’s three caution periods.

Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C. finished third with Blake Stallings of Danville, Va. and Austin Thaxton of Cluster Springs, Va. rounding out the top-five finishers in the 14-car field.

Pembelton averaged 35.007 mph in the race that was slowed by three caution periods.

Allred Makes It Three Wins In A Row

Joe Allred III of Scottsburg, Va. has started a nice winning streak of his own in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

Allred started on the pole and led the entire distance to win Saturday night’s 30-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

Chris Crosby of Raleigh, N.C. finished second with Trey Crews of Halifax, Va., Randy Hupp of Halifax, Va. and Stuart Crews of Long Island, Va. rounding out the top five finishers in the 19-car field.

Lewallen Wins Flathead Fords Race

Gary Lewallen of Trinity, N.C. won the 20-lap race for the competitors in the regional touring Legendary Flathead Fords Racing Association.

Lewallen edged Bill Blair of Thomasville, N.C. for the win with Garland Ricketts of South Boston, Va. finishing third.

Harry Hale of Wirtz, Va. finished fifth overall but was the winner of the trophy awarded for the top-finishing driver in the circuit’s Sportsman Division.
