Morris Extends Streak At SBS

South Boston, Va…….Philip Morris received another tough test in Saturday night’s Bojangles Presents Whelen Night 150 NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division race here at South Boston Speedway.

Like many others before it, Morris aced it.

Morris, of Ruckersville, Va., fought off repeated challenges from Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C. and edged Pulliam by .630-second in a 97-lap green-flag run to the finish to win the 150-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division race.

South Boston Speedway officials had posted a $500 bounty for any driver that could snap Morris’ lengthy winning streak. But, because Morris won the race and scored his seventh straight win and seventh win in eight starts here this season, the bounty hunters went home empty-handed.

Morris and Pulliam dominated the field, so much so that third-place finisher Justin Johnson of Durham, N.C. and fourth-place finisher Natalie Sather of Fargo, N.D. were almost a lap behind at the end. Only the top four drivers finished on the lead lap.

Josh Oakley of Rougemont, N.C., Dennis Holdren of Roanoke, Va., Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va., Frank Deiny Jr. of Ashland, Va., Tommy Lemons Jr. of Troy, N.C. and Nick Smith of Hampton, Va. rounded out the top ten finishers.

Morris led the entire race and averaged 71.801 mph in the race that was slowed by two caution periods that consumed eight laps.

Pembelton Wins Limited Sportsman Race

Brian Pembelton of Amelia, Va. scored his second win of the season in the night’s 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.

Pembelton fought off challenges from Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. to earn the win. His margin of victory was .831-second.

Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C. finished third with Joey Throckmorton of South Boston, Va. and Blake Stallings of Danville, Va. rounding out the top five finishers.

Pembelton led all but one lap of the race.

Allred Sweeps Pure Stock Twinbill

Joe Allred, III of Scottsburg, Va. ran his season win total to three victories by sweeping the night’s pair of 30-lap races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

Allred topped Trey Crews of Halifax, Va. by 1.335 second in the first 30-lap race, holding off Crews in a 17-lap green-flag sprint that followed the last of the race’s two caution periods.

Randy Hupp of Halifax, Va., Stuart Crews of Long Island, Va. and Bruce Mayo of Halifax, Va. completed the top five finishers.

As he had done in the first race, Allred started on the pole in the nightcap and led the entire race in the second 30-lap battle.

Stuart Crews finished second with Hupp, Daniel Crews of Long Island, Va. and Trey Crews rounding out the top five finishers.

Gwynn Wins Southern Vintage Modified Race

Daryl Gwynn of Reidsville, N.C. started on the pole and led all the way in winning the 25-lap race for the Southern Vintage Modified Division.

The win was the second of the season for Gwynn.

Donnie Lacks of Goode, Va., Darryl Lacks of Goode, Va., Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. and Jeff Guill of Madison Heights, Va. completed the top five finishers.
