Hunting season begins Saturday night at South Boston Speedway

Hunting season officially begins Saturday night at South Boston Speedway — bounty hunting, that is.

Multi-time NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion Philip Morris has been, in a word, dominant at South Boston Speedway in the 2011 season. Peyton Sellers, a former champion at America's Hometown Track and himself a former NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion, won the season-opening NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division event on March 12.

Since that time, however, Morris has owned Victory Lane. Morris has reeled off six consecutive victories, including a sweep of a twinbill last weekend.

Therefore, speedway officials have announced that a $500 bounty will be placed on Morris this weekend during the Bojangles presents Whelen Night 150 race program.

South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice announced the $500 bounty this week. Any driver who can score a victory over Morris can collect the bounty. Rice noted that Morris must still be competing at the end of the race for a driver to claim the bounty and she added that Morris can also claim the bounty if he elects to start from the rear of the field and attempt to work his way to the front to score a seventh consecutive triumph.

The 150-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division race is one of five action-packed events slated Saturday as part of the Bojangles presents Whelen Night 150 program. The first of the five events will get underway at 7 p.m.

The Limited Sportsman Division and Southern Vintage Modifieds will also hit the four-tenths mile asphalt oval for competition and the Budweiser Pure Stock Division drivers will wage battle in twin races Saturday.

In reeling off six consecutive victories, Morris has opened a whopping 70-point advantage over a second-place tie between Josh Oakley and two-time defending champion Justin Johnson in the chase for the 2011 track championship. Frank Deiny Jr. is in fourth place and is only six points behind the second-place tie, while Natalie Sather and Matt Bowling are deadlocked in the fifth-place position.

Justin Snow owns the top spot in the Limited Sportsman Division. He is 12 points ahead of Brian Pembelton, while Danny Willis Jr. is third and is only two points behind Pembelton.

Trey Crews will enter the twin races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division with a seven-point lead over Daniel Crews. Joe Allred and Randy Hupp are tied for third place in the division standings and trail Daniel Crews by only one point.

Darryl Lacks leads the title hunt in the Southern Vintage Modifieds by 16 points over a second-place tie between Joseph Overstreet and Daryl Gwynn.

Pit registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Practice for all divisions will be held from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and admission will be $10 for adults and children six and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.

For additional information, phone the track at (434) 572-4947 or toll free at 1-877-440-1540.
