Virginia Motor Speedway News
Derrick Quade Picks Up First Late Model Victory; Maxey, Traylor and Toole also pick up wins
Apr 24, 2011 - updated Apr 24th, 2011 2:54pm
Web posted by

Jamaica, VA --

It looked like having the lead in the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway spelled disaster for anyone that had lead. David Williams, Davis Lipscombe and Matt Marshall all held the lead only to have mechanical issues. But once Derick Quade took over the lead on lap 28 he wasn’t going to let anything take away a shot at victory.

The six place starting Quade had worked extremely hard to get to the front and was pressuring marshall for the lead when Marshall spun in front of him on lap 28. The victory wouldn’t come easy as he had to hold off the track’s defending champion Scott Adams of Chester, VA in the waning laps to take his victory at Virginia Motor Speedway.

“This is amazing, this place is so fast you have to be on top of the wheel the whole time, the competition is so tough here but we always feel we have a shot at the win,” commented Derick Quade in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Scott Adams, Kenny Moreland, Tommy Wagner Jr. and Tim Shelton.

In other action Todd Traylor of King William, VA would hold off Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville, VA at the line to take home the Truckin Thunder Sportsman feature win. In the Budweiser Modified feature Brian Maxey of King George, VA would hold off the challenges of Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA win the victory and in the Collision One Limited Stock Division Ryan Toole of Richmond, VA would finish second on the track but would end up with the win after post race inspection.

Davis Lipscombe and David Williams led the field to green with Williams taking command early. Williams would lead the first five laps before his night would go up in smoke on the front stretch handing the lead to Lipscombe.

Lipscombe would have to hold off the advances of Scott Adams over the next fourteen laps until Admas would bobble in turn 2 and give up two spots in the meantime. That allowed Derrick Quade to take over the second spot and set out to catch Lipscombe.

With the leader working slower traffic the battle for second heated up with Matt Marshall taking over the spot. On lap 22 Marshall would catch Lipcombe and as the two raced into turn 2 on lap 23 Lipscombe would slow with mechanical issues and Marshall would get into the back of him bringing out the caution.

On the restart Marshall would set a blistering pace with Quade in tow. On lap 28 Marshall would spin racing out of turn 4 handing the lead to Quade. On the restart Quade would lead Adams, Moreland, Wagner and Tim Shelton into turn 1 for the last time.

Quade would get a great restart and would pull away by several cars lengths and go on to his first victory at Virginia Motor Speedway.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Kelly Samuels and Curtis Barricks lead the field to green with Barricks leading the first lap. The action would get hot real fast as on lap 4 Dan Arnold, Brian Maxey and Joey Polevoy went three wide for second with Polevoy holding on to the spot.

On the next lap they went three wide again this time for the lead as Maxey jumped inside Barricks as Polevoy went outside in turn 3. Maxey would emerge with the lead followed by Polevoy. Dan Arnold would then make it three wide for second with Polevoy and Barricks.

By lap 10 Maxey had a five car length advantage over Arnold as he headed into traffic. While in traffic Arnold would close in on the bumper of Maxey. On lap 15 the races second and last caution would close the filed on Maxey for a restart.

On the restart Maxey got a huge jump and would build a cushion Arnold would not erase as Maxey would go on to take the victory. Rounding out the top five were Dan Arnold, Joey Polevoy, Brandon Galloway and Curtis Barricks.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman teammates Roy Skaggs and Junior Carter led the field to green with Carter leading the first lap followed closely by Todd Traylor. On the next circuit Carter would spin in turn 4 to bring out the caution and handing the lead to Traylor.

On the restart Traylor would pull away as Davey Pullen and Roger Jamerson battled for second. On lap 5 Michael hayes would bring out another caution with a spin in turn 4. On the restart Jamerson would get inside Pullen in turn 2 and take over second.

On lap 11 Jamerson would look outside Traylor out of turn 2 in an attempt to take the lead. On lap 17 Traylor had trouble working lapped traffic allowing Jamerson to close to his bumper. Jamerson would make one more run at Traylor on the final lap and out of turn 4 would swing to the outside but come up short as Traylor would cross the line as the winner by .171 seconds. Rounding out the top five were J.R. Guy, Davey Pullen and Stephen Childress.

In the Collision One Limited Stock Car 25 lap feature Raymond Harper and Brett Adkins led the field to green with Harper taking the lead. The action was two and three wide all the way back to tenth. On lap 4 caution would come out for a car stopped in turn 1. On the restart Toole went after Harper for the lead followed by Adkins, Harper would spin in turn 2 to bring out the caution once again. On the restart Toole and Adkins went back at it for the top spot with Adkins getting under Toole out of turn 4 and taking the lead by inches at the line.

A couple of cautions would slow the event with Adkins holding on to the top spot each time. Toole would turn up the heat on lap 13 looking inside Adkins for the lead and getting side by side heading to the line. Each lap Toole would try Adkins in turn 4 and each time Adkins would hold him off until lap 17 when Toole would get under him in turn 2 only to have the caution come out and relegate him back to second. On the races final restart Adkins would get a great restart and pull away by three car lengths. Toole would make it a race as he would get under Adkins coming out of turn 4 but come up a bit short as Adkins would take the win by .135 seconds at the line. After post race inspection Toole was declared the winner.

Rounding out the top five were David Bowler, Wesley Givens, Joe Ender and Ricky Douglas.
