Rogers, RBR looking to build on strong Daytona finish at Phoenix
Feb 22, 2011 - updated Feb 22nd, 2011 1:01pm

CERRO GORDO, N.C. --

Third Place Finish Puts Southeastern N.C.-Based Team in NCWTS Points Lead
(February 22, 2011) – Clay Rogers was charging to the front of the field when the checkered flag fell last week at Daytona.

Rogers and the Ricky Benton Racing (RBR) Enterprises BTS Tire & Wheel Distributors/fleetHQ.com No. 92 Chevy Silverado team are heading to Phoenix International Raceway looking to maintain the momentum that almost carried them to victory in Roger’s debut with the team.

Buoyed by a third-place finish in the season-opening, NextEra Energy Resources 250 – and thanks to NASCAR’s new championship rules – Rogers heads to PIR for the Lucas Oil 150 with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points lead and an extra measure of confidence about the 2011 season.

Rogers gained 42 points under NASCAR’s new simplified points structure for the third place finish. Neither Michael Waltrip, who won the race, nor Elliott Sadler, who came home second, are running for the Truck Series championship this year and therefore are not eligible to earn points in that series. Rogers leads Miguel Paludo by two points and Jeffrey Earnhardt, Ricky Carmichael and James Buescher by five points heading into Friday night’s race.

“I knew if we could stay out of trouble - and that’s a big if - and found the right pusher we could have a top-10 finish,” said Rogers. “We stayed out of trouble and found the right pusher.”

Rogers’ late-race dash to the front was pushed by Kyle Busch, who tucked in behind the rear bumper of the No. 92 Silverado, proving that Rogers had earned a great deal of respect from one of NASCAR’s biggest stars.

“People don’t know what Daytona means - these guys with the No. 92 Ricky Benton team are pretty pumped up now,” Busch said. “So I’m glad I could help them out and push them to the front.”

“Kyle and I worked together in one of these truck races in 2007 at Talladega,” Rogers said. “He and I have a good relationship at the track and I said on the way down here that if we got a chance to work together he would. He always seems to make things happen.”

While confidence was abundant after the strong run, Rogers and the team knows there is still a lot to do to make 2011 a successful season.

“While we left Daytona with a lot of faith in what this team can do,” Rogers said, “we still have a lot of work to do. We were back at it in the shop in Cerro Gordo (N.C.) Monday morning getting ready for Phoenix. The guys have been working really hard on the setup. It’s a much different race than Daytona. We are trying to narrow this information gap that we have with some of these other teams and build some adjustability into the truck before we get to the track.”

Rogers and the RBR team are committed to running the first five races of the 2011 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, but are looking to put sponsorship together to run the full season.

“I think we proved that we have a pretty good combination with Clay, crew chief Michael Hester and this group of guys,” said Benton. “We are looking for some partners who want to go racing with us this year and keep this up.”
