South Boston Speedway News
Moore, Saunders Named Top SBS Race Officials
Jan 17, 2011 - updated Jan 17th, 2011 7:53pm
Web posted by Tim Chandlers

Southboston, Va. --

South Boston Speedway will have two new head race officials for the 2011 season, with Alan Moore of Ringgold, Va. serving as Race Director and David “Lightning” Saunders of South Boston, Va. serving as Director of Tech.

“I feel that the 2011 will be a great season,” remarked South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice. “A lot of changes are taking place at South Boston Speedway this season. We will have some different faces in some places and we have made some rules changes that we feel will make for more competitive racing and a better show for our fans. “The group of officials that we had in place in 2010 did a good job and we appreciate their efforts,” Rice added. “At the same time, I’m looking forward to working with Alan, David and the group of officials that we are assembling for the 2011 season.”

Moore has been involved in racing for many years and brings a good deal of experience to the job. Before serving as South Boston Speedway’s official track photographer from 2001-2010, he worked with several race teams, including the J&J Racing Late Model Sportsman race team. He was a member of the J&J Racing Team from 1988-1991 and worked with former NASCAR national Busch Series champion Tommy Ellis when Ellis won the national championship.

In addition, Moore worked with the late Alan Kulwicki in the NASCAR Cup Series and worked with Robert Pressley when Pressley competed in the Cup and Busch Series.

Moore has also worked with area Late Model Stock Car and Limited Sportsman racing teams. He worked with H.C. Sellers’ team when Sellers won the Limited Sportsman Division title at South Boston Speedway. In addition, he has worked with former NASCAR national champion Peyton Sellers of Danville in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division.

“This is a challenge I’ve been looking forward to,” Moore said. “I really appreciate the opportunity to come to work at South Boston Speedway with Cathy Rice and the Mattioli Family. As a whole, the 2011 season at South Boston Speedway is going to be exciting.”

Saunders is a Roxboro, N.C. native who makes South Boston, Va. his home. Like Moore, he has been involved in racing for many years, having worked in the sport over a span of three decades. He started out in racing as a team member of the race team formed by the late Danny Willis Sr. and most recently served as crew chief for Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. in the Limited Sportsman Division. Saunders has served as crew chief for several notable area drivers including Carl Long and Scott Riggs. He has also served as crew chief for Bobby Hamilton Jr. and the late Bobby Hamilton Sr. Like Moore, Saunders said he is grateful to have the opportunity to serve South Boston Speedway as a race official.

“I’m really excited about it,” Saunders remarked. “I’ve been thinking about it, and the opportunity became available late last season. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.”

The 2011 racing season at South Boston Speedway begins on Saturday, March 12, with an afternoon event featuring the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars as well as the Limited Sportsman, Budweiser Pure Stocks and Southern Vintage Modified divisions.

Season passes are on sale for $150 each. The season passes may be purchased at the South Boston Speedway office.
