Long wins third in a row as Adams takes Championship
Sep 5, 2010 - updated Sep 5th, 2010 11:56am
Web posted by Dave Seay

--

Jamaica, VA – 2010 started out with so much promise for Stevie Long of Mechanicsville, MD but a terrible month of July doomed his chances at the Victory Lap Late Mode championship. Once his engine problems were solved Long went on a tear winning two of the three events heading into the last point race of the season. The last race of the year would be no different as Long worked his way to the front from his fifth place starting position to take the lead from point leader Scott Adams of Chester, VA on lap 5 and then cruised to his fifth win of the season. Although he didn’t win the battle Adams would finish fourth and be crowned the 2010 Victory Lap Late Model Champion.

“We would have liked to win the championship but we did what we had to do after all that bad luck in July we went out and won races but Scott (Adams) and his team did a better job all season long and we have to congratulate him on winning the championship,” commented Long in victory lane.

Sommey Lacey and Scott Adams led the field to green with Adams jumping out to the lead just as caution flew for a three car pile up in turn 2. It took two restarts to get the race back under way with Adams, Lacey and Stevie Long going three wide out of turn 4 for the lead. Adams would lead the first lap followed closely by Long and Lacey.

On lap 3 Long worked inside Adams in turn 4. The two raced side by side back to turn 2 where Long powered to the lead. Once out front, Long began to pull away from the battle for second as Adams worked to hold off Lacey for the position.

By lap 20 Long had pulled away by ten car lengths when caution closed the field on his bumper. On the restart Long once again darted out to a sizeable lead over Adams as the rest of the field jostled for position.

On lap 25 Lacey began to pressure Adams for second. On lap 28 Lacey powered inside Adams in turn 2 to take over second. On the next circuit Tom Cohick would get inside Adams for third. With the field battling behind him Long would cruise to his fifth win of the season.

Rounding out the top five were Sommey Lacey, Tom Cohick, Scott Adams and Matt Marshall. With his fourth place finish Scott Adams of Chester, VA was crowned the 2010 Victory Lap Late Model Champion.

“I have to thank my crew chief Bubba Hubbard for all the hard work he has put into getting this car to the front, it has been a great marriage and I look forward to many years to come with him turning the wrenches. We were consistent all year long and it paid off with a championship,” commented Adams

In other action Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA traded the lead back and forth four times with Brian Maxey of King George, VA before securing the top spot on lap 23 of the 25 lap Budweiser Modified feature to take the win and the 2010 Championship. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville, VA worked his way from eighth to the lead in 10 laps going on to the win and the 2010 Championship. And in the Collision One Limited Stock Cars James Givens of New Kent, VA took home the win as Ryan Toole of Richmond, VA took home the 2010 Championship.

In the Budweiser Modified division Brian Maxey of King George, VA and defending champion Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA began the night tied atop the standings. After hot lap qualifying Arnold emerged with a one point advantage heading into the 25 lap feature after setting a new division track record and Maxey qualifying second.

After inverting the top 6 in qualifying Brandon Galloway and Tony Quade led the field to green with Galloway leading the first circuit. On lap 2 Maxey moved to second with Arnold taking over third. A caution on lap 2 closed the field on Galloway’s bumper. On the restart Maxey took a peak to the inside of Galloway in turn 1 with Arnold in tow. On lap 5 Maxey finally got inside Galloway for the lead with Arnold going to second.

On the next circuit Arnold got inside Maxey out of turn 4 for the lead with Maxey trying a crossover move as the two raced back into turn 1. On lap 10 Arnold and Maxey split a lapped car in turn 1 with Maxey going low and Arnold high. Maxey would emerge as the leader when the two exited turn 2.

Several cautions slowed the pace of the race and closing the field on Maxey’s bumper. On lap 16 Arnold began looking inside Maxey for the lead. Over the next six laps Arnold and Maxey would race side by side for the lead and on lap 21 Arnold used a slide job out of turn 4 to take over the top spot.

Maxey would try to keep pace but Arnold just pulled away over the final three laps to take his fourth win of the season and pick up the 2010 Budweiser Modified Championship by three points over Maxey. Rounding out the top five were Brian Maxey, Josh Harris, Brandon Galloway and John Ferguson.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature John Kirby and J.R. Guy led the field to green with Kirby leading the first circuit. On lap 3 Guy would get inside Kirby and the two would race that way over the next five laps with Kirby holding on by inches at the line each time until lap 8 when Guy would finally take over the top spot.

On lap 8 Roger Jamerson would get inside Kirby for second and on the next circuit would get Guy for the lead out of turn 2. Once out front Jamerson put it on cruise control and rolled to his fifth win of the season and the 2010 Truckin Thunder Sportsman championship. Rounding out the top five were John Kirby, Stephen Childress, Shawn Otey and Michael Roop.

In the Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature the top six in points all went into the night with a shot at the championship with Brett Adkins leading the pack with a six point cushion over Ryan Toole. James Givens and Kevin Fletcher would lead the field to green with Givens leading the first lap. Caution would come out on lap 2 when Kevin Fletcher spun in turn 2 collecting Brett Adkins and sending him flipping and dashing his chances at a repeat as the division champion.

On the restart Givens pulled with his son Wesley in tow and soon to be son-in-law Brandon Sandridge looking to take second. Sandridge would get by for second but could not get close enough to Givens for the lead.

As Givens and the rest of the top five received the white flag Fletcher spun in turn 4 and went flipping when Mark Guindon had no where to go clipping Fletcher in the process bringing out the caution and checkers giving Givens the win. Rounding out the top five were Brandon Sandridge, Wesley Givens, Ryan Toole and Brandon Coates. With his fourth place finish Ryan Toole was crowned the 2010 Collision One Limited Stock Car Champion.
