Southern Mod tour highlights Labor Day weekend program Thursday, September 2, 2010

Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour & NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway -

Sept. 2

With points leader L.W. Miller heading the
stampede, the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will roll into Langley Speedway this Saturday, Sept. 4, for the Visit Hampton 150, the featured event of the track’s Labor Day weekend program.

In addition to the NASCAR Southern Modifieds, Saturday’s lineup includes: B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Casey Cycle City INEX Legends
(25 laps); and, Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts
(20 laps).

Front gates open at 1 p.m., just in time for early-arriving fans to
catch the final practice for the NASCAR Southern Mods. Practice for the
track divisions gets under way at 2. Coors Light Pole qualifying for the
NWSMT drivers is slated for 4:30, followed by time trials for the local
classes. An autograph session with the NASCAR Southern Mod stars is
scheduled for 6, while opening ceremonies begin at 6:45. The first race
goes green at 7 and the approximate start time for the Visit Hampton 150
is 7:30.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children, 6-12. “Little Race
Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military
personnel (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+,
with ID) receive a $2 discount off the adult ticket price.
Advance tickets may be purchased online by clicking on the appropriate
link at www.langley-speedway.com or in the Speedway office during
regular business hours.

Each of the last three NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour races has
produced a change at the top of the series standings. Miller currently
holds that “hot potato” position with a tenuous seven-point advantage
over Andy Seuss, who scored his second win of the season last weekend at
Caraway Speedway. James Civali is third, just 12 points behind Seuss.
                               • • •
Saturday’s Visit Hampton 150 will be recorded for broadcast on the
VERSUS cable channel. The program is scheduled to air on Wednesday,
Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. A repeat showing is slated for Sunday, Sept. 12, at
11 p.m.
Former NASCAR Modified champ and longtime Cup Series competitor Jimmy
Spencer, “Mr. Excitement,” is the lead announcer for the VERSUS
telecasts and is expected to be on hand for this weekend’s race.
                               • • •
Thomas Stinson, a regular in the track’s B&C Seafood Modified class, is
slated for double-duty on Saturday night as he plans to make his second
NWSMT start of the season. He competed in the series’ April 3 event at
South Boston Speedway and posted a fourth-place finish.
                               • • •
Since Saturday’s race marks the series’ first visit to Langley under the
NASCAR banner, the Coors Light Pole winner will also garner the
distinction of being the track record-holder for the division.
If drivers are looking for an unofficial benchmark, though, they can
take aim at Pat DePointe’s 15.808-second effort (89.954 mph), which came
in qualifying for a SMART Modified event in July of 2001.
                               • • •
It’s not easy to make hay in someone else’s pasture, but C.E. Falk did
just that last Saturday night. Langley’s 2010 Late Model champion paid a
visit to Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., for twin races and came
away with a win and a third-place finish.
Falk’s productive road trip has vaulted him to third place in this
week’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national rankings. He’s in a
dogfight, though, as only six points separate him from sixth-place Ted
Christopher. Duane Howard and Justin Johnson are sandwiched between Falk
and Christopher, in fourth and fifth, respectively.
 Other Langley stalwarts in the top 100 include: Greg Edwards (7th);
Woody Howard (13th); Danny Edwards Jr. (20th); Wes Falk (38th); Mark
Wertz (40th); Brandon Gdovic (55th); Casey Wyatt (83rd); and, new entry
Matt Waltz (96th).
In the Virginia state standings, C.E. Falk has overtaken Johnson for the
top spot and holds a two-point advantage. Greg Edwards, Howard and Danny
Edwards Jr. are third, fifth and seventh, in that order. Wes Falk, Wertz
and Gdovic are 12th, 13th and 14th, while Wyatt checks in at 17th.
The 2010 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series points window closes on
Sunday, Sept. 19.
                               • • •
Langley Speedway will be silent next Saturday, Sept. 11, as the local
racing fraternity shifts its focus to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
activities at Richmond International Raceway.
The venerable Hampton speedplant springs back to life on Saturday, Sept.
18, though, with a six-race feature slate. The lineup includes B&C
Seafood Modifieds (Twin 50s), Langley Fan Club Super Streets, Casey
Cycle City INEX Legends, EZ Auto of Newport News UCARs and Rhonnda
Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts.
                               • • •
A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley
Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at
11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
