Long takes Late Model Feature with last lap pass; Maxey, Jamerson and Adkins return to victory lane
Aug 29, 2010 - updated Aug 29th, 2010 12:38pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Jamaica, VA --

You don’t have to lead them all, you just have to lead the last one to get the victory and that is exactly what Stevie Long of Mechanicsville, MD did during the 35 lap Victory Lap Late Model feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway.

Long started seventh and slowing worked his way to the front taking over second from David Williams on lap 28. On lap 31 Adams was working the lapped car of Junior Carter in turn 3 heading into turn 4 Carter broke loose and Adams ran into the back of him sending Carter spinning and bringing out the caution. That put Long on Adams bumper for the races final restart.

Over the final four laps Long tried several times to get inside Adams for the lead but to no avail. Adams looked to on his way to victory when on the final lap Adams jumped the cushion in turn 3 giving Long the opening he needed to make the pass and go on to take the victory.

“I’m not going to say I was settling for second but I thought Adams had us covered for the win, when he made the mistake I was in position to take over the lead and go on to the win,” commented Long in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Scott Adams, David Williams, Matt Marshall and Davis Lipscombe.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman feature Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville, VA led flag to flag to pick up the victory and continued to build on his point lead. The win didn’t come easy though as he had to fend off several challenges from Taylor Doggett of Ruther Glen, VA before puling away for the victory. Rounding out the top five were fast qualifier Tony Wood, J.R. Guy and Michael Roop.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Charlie Hubbard and page Harrison led the field to green with Harrison leading the first circuit. On lap 3, caution would come out when Dan Arnold and Hubbard got together in turn 2. On lap 4 James Marshall took over the top spot from Harrison. On lap 9 Brian Maxey would assume the top spot with an inside pass on Marshall in turn 2.

The races final caution would come out lap 21 for Neal Hudgins who came to a stop in turn 2 with a flat tire. On the restart Arnold took over second from Brandon Galloway and set his sites on Maxey. Over the final three laps Arnold would get to the inside of Maxey but couldn’t make the pass. At the white flag the Arnold was a car length back and in turn 3 made went to the inside of Maxey for the lead. The two raced door to door with Maxey nipping Arnold at the line for the victory. Rounding out the top five were Brandon Galloway, Josh Harris and Lance Grady.

In the Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature seventh starting Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA assumed the lead when leaders James Givens and Joe Ender got together on lap 6 eliminating both from contention with flat tires. Once out front Adkins set his ride on cruise control and went on to take the victory. Rounding out the top five were Kevin Fletcher, Ryan Toole, Brandon Coates and Marty Coltrain.

Before the night’s events got under way Jon Helwig of Dunnsville, VA, a 22 year competitor was surprised by the track and his family. Helwig, diagnosed with cancer in December of 2009, has been battling the disease with the help of his friends and family. Since finding out his cancer Helwig has had two things he has wanted to do and that was to drive his modified one more time and to go deep sea fishing. With the help of family and many of the Budweiser Modified division drivers his old car was put back together so he could start tonight’s race, fulfilling one of his wishes. Helwig will also have his second wish of deep sea fishing granted by track sponsor Victory Lap, LLC who will take him out for the excursion of his life.
