Joe Heigl Takes First of Year at Wake County Speedway

Raleigh, NC --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Joe Heigl, Randy Renfrow and the rest of the Dunn Benson Ford Super Late Models have spent the first four races staring at the back of David Clark’s machine. For the first time this year, however, someone other than Clark found their way into the winner’s circle.

Renfrow and Clark set identical qualifying times, putting both drivers on the front row for the start of their 50 lap feature event. Renfrow would pull out to an early lead, with Clark giving chase. After a Lap 2 caution for a Curtis Simpkins mechanical failure, Charlie Stephenson and Joe Heigl would both slip by Clark, with the point-leader never getting closer than fourth for the rest of the night.

Randy Renfrow would lead the first 22 laps, with Heigl making it by on Lap 23. A short barrage of cautions would give Renfrow three shots at Heigl from the outside, but Heigl was too strong at the bottom of the track. Charlie Stephenson would make a late charge for second place, but couldn’t slip by. As Lap 50 went in the books, it would be Joe Heigl winning, with Randy Renfrow finishing second and Charlie Stephenson third.

In Dunn Benson Ford Super Late Model points, David Clark still holds a 25 point lead over Joe Heigl, with Charlie Stephenson 48 points back in third.

Frankie Dominick Jr. has dominated the Harper’s Grafix Limited Late Model division, winning 7 of 8 races going into Friday night’s race. He’d again sit on the pole for the 30 lap LLM event, with Curtis Simpkins on his outside. Dominick Jr. would go out to an early lead. A Lap 2 caution would bunch the field back up, and on the ensuing restart, Dominick would spin the tires, giving Curtis Simpkins his first lead of 2010.

Simpkins would lead the field for the next seven laps until spinning off turn 4, with the entire field having to take evasive action. Simpkins’ spin would give Roland the lead, and the next 21 laps would see Roland driving frantically to keep Dominick Jr. in his mirror. Dominick Jr. would close, but run out of time, with Will Roland taking his second victory in 2010. Dominick would settle for second, with Curtis Simpkins rallying for third.

Despite the second-place finish, Frankie Dominick Jr. holds a commanding 187 point lead over Cory Walker in Harper’s Grafix Limited Late Model points. Will Roland is third, 258 out.

Going into the night’s NC Iron Works Pro Modified race, Justin Jones had taken six of eight checkered flags, with Alex Fleming winning the other two events. Those two would battle again, with Jones once again crossing the stripe first.

Kenny Tabler made his return to Wake County Friday night, and managed to pull out to an early lead. Jones was having none of that, however, and quickly moved to the front of the field. Tabler would give chase throughout the 30 lap event until a mechanical failure would end his night early. Alex Fleming would make a run as well, but would suffer a similar fate. That was all Jones needed to take the win, with Dennis Capps finishing second and Mark Hovis rallying for a third place finish.

Despite his average finish of 1.8, Justin Jones leads Dennis Capps by a mere 57 points going into this Friday’s event. Bryan Bracher’s third, 88 points out in NC Iron Works Pro Modified points.

The Citgo Mini Mart Stock Four Cylinder division has been dominated by Dukes, with Jesse and Wilbur holding first and second place in points, respectively. Friday night few things changed, with Jesse again leading every single lap of the 25 lap event to take his eighth win in nine attempts. Wilbur Duke spent the majority of the racing fighting with Chris Privette, with the elder Duke holding off Privette for second place.

In Citgo Mini Mart Stock Four Cylinders, Jesse Duke leads Wilbur Duke by 212 points. Wilbur Duke passes Jeremy Ottaway for second place in points after Ottaway blew an engine earlier in the evening, though Ottaway is only nine points back in third.

In Dirt Cheap Sand Rock & Mulch UCARs, Kristin Gault took her second win of the season, beating out Matt Grimes and Wil Smith for second in third. Grimes has a 84 point lead over Robert Arch going into this Friday’s event. In Legends, Brandon Temple bettered Branton Irving, Dillon Spain and Kyle Resco to win his first race of 2010 at Wake County Speedway.

Racing returns to Raleigh’s quarter-mile bullring this Friday night with a full night of action featuring 30 laps of racing from both the NC Iron Works Pro Modifieds and Harper’s Grafix Limited Late Models. Also in action will be US Legends International, Citgo Mini Mart Four Cylinders and Dirt Cheap Sand Rock & Mulch UCARs. Friday night also brings the return of Kid’s Night with Bike Races! Tickets are just $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, military personnel and kids 12-19, all with valid ID. Children 6-11 are just $5, and kids 5 and under are free.
