Lonnie Sommerville’s Busy July Ends With Maritime Pro Stock Tour Win at Speedway 660

Saint John, NB, Canada --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 7/26/10

Saint John, NB, Canada

The month of July brought more than its fair share of late nights for the Lonnie Sommerville Racing team, but in the end it was all worth it as Sommerville, in dramatic fashion; scored the win in the 100 lap Carquest Maritime Pro Stock Tour race at his home track of Speedway 660 to finish up the busy month. The Saint John, NB driver battled his way from the rear of the field on two occasions to steal the show away from the tour regulars for his second win of the 2010 season.

“I want to first off apologize to all the race fans that had to suffer through that sorry excuse of a race. It’s embarrassing to be a part of a show like that because the reason we are able to race is because of the fans and they deserve a good show,” stated Sommerville after the race. “I suppose being in victory lane is the best place to be on a night like this. I want to say thanks to all my sponsors A.E. McKay Builders, Pub’s Bottle Exchange and everyone that’s helping us out in 2010, we aren’t racing locally too much this season so it’s nice to be able to give these guys a win.”

The lackluster event didn’t come without controversy as seventeen different cautions occurred over the 100 lap event including several questionable calls including one that sent Sommerville to the rear of the field for the second time of the night after previously being spun by fellow competitor Wayne Smith early on. Lonnie spent the entire first half of the event working his way to the top five positions when Greg Proude “chopped” off the #23 machine on the front stretch sending him sliding to infield yet never spinning; while several cars behind the two went crashing causing the yellow flag to be displayed. Tour officials decided to make the call to penalize Sommerville for unspecified reason sending him to the rear once again.

Multiple passes to both the outside and inside of the his competitors Sommerville sliced his way through the field and up to the third position when the yellow flag would fly for the final time with two laps to go setting up a green-white-checkered finish. Sommerville battled Craig Slaunwhite and tour points leader Shawn Turple for the top spot and was forced to put the bumper to the #99 of Craig Slaunwhite on the final lap to take the win by just a nose.

“There’s really not much to say about the race tonight or the calls made out there that would be too beneficial for myself or my race team so I’m going to have to pull a Kyle Busch here and refuse to comment about the situation. The people who were in attendance saw everything they needed to tonight to form their own opinion they don’t need to hear mine,” added Sommerville.

Throughout the month Sommerville produced plenty of solid finishes including both a seventh place finish at the IWK 250 at the Riverside Int’l Speedway in Antigonish, Nova Scotia along with a fifth place finish in the third race of the 2010 PASS National tour at the Thompson Int’l Speedway in Thompson, Connecticut. The finish keeps Sommerville fifth in the national standings with two event remaining on the schedule.
