Update: Championship tussles head into dog days
Wednesday, July 14, 2010
In possession of a 26-point lead in the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Car standings after his victory in last week's Hampton Heat 200, C.E. Falk continues his push toward a second straight championship this Saturday, July 17, when Langley Speedway plays host to Coliseum Central Night - the 13th event on the track's 2010 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series calendar.
Saturday's feature lineup includes: Late Models (100 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Larry King Legal Services Super Trucks (25 laps); EZ Auto of Newport News UCARs (25 laps); and, Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).
Front gates open at 1 p.m. and afternoon practice starts at 2. Time trials get under way at 4:30, following a drivers meeting at 4:15. Pre-race festivities begin at 6:45 and the racing program kicks off shortly after 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military personnel (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.
Advance tickets may be purchased online by clicking on the appropriate link at www.langley-speedway.com or at the Speedway office during regular business hours.

Falk's Hampton Heat 200 victory, a feat he compared to harpooning Moby Dick, allowed him to hang onto seventh place in this week's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Top 500. Keith Rocco, who competes at a trio of Connecticut speedplants, retained the top spot for another week, although Craig Preble of I-80 Speedway in Nebraska has inched closer.
Other Langley regulars near the top of the national rankings include: Woody Howard (12th), Greg Edwards (24th), Wes Falk (26th), Danny Edwards Jr. (42nd), Mark Wertz (63rd) and Brandon Gdovic (85th).
In the Virginia state standings, C.E. Falk and Howard check in at second and third, respectively, behind Justin Johnson of South Boston Speedway. Greg Edwards and Wes Falk are sixth and seventh, while Danny Edwards Jr. is ninth. Wertz ranks 13th and Gdovic is 16th.

While much has been made lately of the "Big Three" assembled by the NBA's Miami Heat, Langley's Modified and Super Truck divisions can each point to their own dominant trios.
In the Modified class, Shawn Balluzzo, Rusty Wood and Thomas Stinson have combined to win all five races. Balluzzo leads the title chase by two over Wood and by four over Stinson, as the three have clearly separated themselves from the rest of the pack.
Similarly, Robbie Davis, Tommy Nixon and Brad Adams have turned the battle for the Super Truck crown into a three-way joust. Heading into Saturday's race, Davis is up by 12 over Nixon and 14 over Adams. Between them, the three have won all eight races.
. . .
In the UCAR division, Michael Joyner holds a slim, two-point edge over Sammy Gaita in the current rankings. Adam Florian, who skipped the May 22 event for a brief foray into the INEX Legends class, looms just 22 points back, in third.
While he may not be a title contender, after missing the season's first three races, Chris Hildebrand has shown himself to be a worthy adversary for Florian, a four-time winner.
In the series' last three races, Florian and Hildebrand have finished 1-2 with Florian winning twice and Hildebrand once. In Hildebrand's two runner-up outings, he came from the 14th and 15th starting spots. When he had a chance to start closer to the front, on June 12, Hildebrand overwhelmed the field and took the checkers.

Teammates Bill Dailey and Mike Dayton rank first and second in the Champ Kart standings. Through the campaign's first seven events, each driver has posted two victories.

NASCAR excitement continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, July 24. That evening's six-race slate includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars, Langley Fan Club Super Streets, Casey Cycle City INEX Legends, EZ Auto of Newport News UCARs, Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts and Standard Welding Pro Sixes.
