Orange County Speedway News
Craig Moore Takes Win, Point Lead at Orange County Speedway
Jun 20, 2010 - updated Jun 20th, 2010 6:16pm
Web posted by Ken Childs

Rougemont,N.C. --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 20, 2010

Craig Moore has battled for the last three race events at Orange County Speedway to stay in front, each time being bested by Joey Mahanes. Saturday night, it was Moore’s turn to shine.

In the 100 lap Late Model Stock event, Moore not only set the fast time in qualifying, but managed to draw the pole. Because of his three consecutive wins, point-leader Joey Mahanes could start no better than sixth. Moore showed the strength of his Strutmasters.com Chevrolet early, pulling out to a full straight lead at the 3/8 mile oval. A lap 33 caution for an incident between Tracey Chambers and Louis White would end Chambers’ night and bunch the field back up, allowing then-second place driver Terry Dease to catch back up to Moore.

Following the restart, Joey Mahanes made his move, getting past Terry Dease and moving to second place. Throughout subsequent cautions for Thomas Scott and Ben Peterson issues, Mahanes had a handful of attempts to make it past Craig Moore, but this weekend Moore was too strong for too long, leading all 100 laps, winning the race and moving into the point lead by two points. Joey Mahanes finished second, five car length back. Terry Dease fought off Paul Bryant for third, with Bryant finishing fourth and Zachary Marks finishing fifth.

In Late Model Stock points, Craig Moore takes the lead from Joey Mahanes by two points. Terry Dease sits third, a mere six points out of second and eight points out of the championship lead.

Brain Cole qualified third in Limited Sportsman, but managed to draw the pole for the 50 lap event. It was a long evening for Chapel Hill driver Michael Hatley, as Hatley brought out the caution on three occasions. The final spin for Hatley involved contact with OCS veteran Jerry Hinesley. Both drivers would take on insurmountable damage, with a small shoving match occurring on pit road after both drivers exited their machines.

Point-leader Justin Newlin would qualify eighth, but failed to show the dominance that he has displayed throughout the early part of the season, working his way through the field early but stalling out in fourth place. Brian Cole would lead flag to flag, winning his second race of the season. Timmy Ferrell would take the checkered flag second, but failed tech after the race for a too wide tread-width. That would give second place to Steve Collins, with Justin Newlin getting his fourth place finish moved up to third. Outside pole-sitter Chuck Lawson received credit for fourth, with Ricky Jones taking fifth.

The Orange County Speedway rulebook states that any driver winning four or more races in a row will have to start in the rear of the field. Keith Edwards is the first driver to have to do so. The Grand Stock point leader started shotgun on the field, but had the lead by 23 after getting around Daniel Schadt. Dennis Sargent would also make it past Schadt on lap 23, but was unable to put pressure on Edwards, giving Edwards his fifth win in 2010. Sargent pulled away from Schadt to finish second, with Schadt, Lee Anderson and Chris Carroll rounding out the top five.

Daryl Gwynn passed Jerry Scott on lap 18 to win the Southern Ground Pounders Open Modified race, with Tommy Buxton winning his second straight Sportsman race after an early-race pass on James Turner. In Legends, Chris Davis led from flag to flag, bettering Brandon Meeks and Mason Hudson, with Matt Murphy besting Reid Wilson and Grayson Massey in Bandoleros.

Racing action returns to the high banks of Orange County Speedway this Saturday with the return of the Pro All Star Series’ Southern Sizzler featuring 150 green flag laps from the PASS South series. Also in action will be the Orange County Speedway Limited Sportsman division as well as the Allison Legacy Series, Legends and Bandoleros. Tickets are just $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for students 11-17, with kids 10 and under free. For more information, contact the Orange County Speedway office at (336) 364-1222 or race to www.ocstrack.com.
