Langley Speedway News
Langley Speedway Honors Al Pearce Saturday June 12th with special guest.

Hampton Va. --

Langley Speedway, the only NASCAR-sanctioned weekly track in southeastern Virginia, is proud to announce that it will honor long-time motorsports journalist Al Pearce early in Saturday night's NASCAR Whelen All-American racing program presented by Sysco.

Pearce, a native of Rocky Mount, N.C. and long-time resident of Newport News, began his motorsports career at Langley in the summer of 1969. He had been hired directly from the Army to cover NASCAR for the The Times-Herald (now, Daily Press) and his stories, features and columns from Langley appeared in the Peninsula newspaper for the next 30-plus years. He retired in 2004, but continues to cover major NASCAR races almost weekend for AutoWeek magazine.

"Considering everything that Al has meant to short-track racing around here, we felt it was fitting that we dedicated our media center in his name," said track GM Chuck Hall. "It's impossible to estimate how many of our current fans learned about Langley Speedway and first came for the first time because of Al's stories in the Times-Herald and Daily Press. Over his 35 years at the newspapers, it's probably safe to say he's spent maybe 500 days and nights out here. That's quite a record, one we feel is deserving of this honor."

Former Langley Speedway promoter Joe Carver and former track and NASCAR Mid-Atlantic Regional champion Elton Sawyer are among the special guests returning for the ceremony. Carver is generally credited with reviving the ailing track during his 10 eventful years (early-70s to early-80s). He left Langley to work with long-time friends Darrell Waltrip and Travis Carter, and currently works with a company near Charlotte that schedules and delivers show car

Sawyer is among a host of competitors (among them, Geoffrey Bodine, Denny Hamlin and Ashton Lewis Jr.) who used Langley as a springboard to their NASCAR careers. After his Late Model career the Chesapeake native won two poles and two Nationwide Series races, was a top-10 points finisher six times, including three seasons in the top-5. After a brief career in Sprint Cup, he worked for Bill Davis and Ray Evernham, and currently is on the technical management staff at Team Red Bull.

Saturday night's six-race SYSCO Rock Star 265 program includes a Late Model 100, Modified 50, Grand Stock 40, and 25-lap races for the Super Truck, Legend and UCAR classes.
