Faison encouraged despite wreck at Old Dominion Speedway

SEAFORD, De. – Two weeks after having his NASCAR Whelen All-American Series debut rained out, Seaford resident C.J. Faison finally got to race last Saturday, and despite wrecking on the 25th lap of the late-model stockcar race, he came away from Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Va., on Saturday with a sense of encouragement.
The 16-year-old Faison, who drives the Delaware Auto Exchange #39 Chevy Impala, returned to action after an eight-month layoff clocked the second-fastest practice run times of the weekend's 16-car field. Faison's best time of the three practice runs on the three-eighths-mile oval track was 16.46 seconds.

The starter on Faison's late model stock car failed at the start of the qualifying run, and instead of clocking another impressive time, he came in 11th.

“I was hoping to get a top five spot, but my starter failed and that kind of flustered me,” said Faison, a sophomore enrolled in Bradenton (Fla.) Prep's online academy. “Rather than focusing on driving, I was just thinking about getting back into the pits to get the car fixed.
During the first 24 laps of the race, Faison moved up to seventh place, but his night ended prematurely. On the 25th lap, a wreck occurred, and Faison couldn't avoid the pileup.

“I went right into the back of them, and it was all over from there” said Faison, a four-time National Modified Lites champion and 50-race winner. “My goal was get a top-five finish and have a solid run. The bad part was that we crashed. But I'm really encouraged. After the practice runs, we know we have a fast car. The Delaware Auto Exchange #39 Chevy Impala was running great, and that helps boost my confidence for the next week, so I'm excited about getting back out there.”

Faison -- who is also sponsored by R&R Autosales, Awesome Raceware, Hans Devise, Cokesbury Equine clinic and Cmedia Design -- will race again at Old Dominion Speedway on May 22.

“My goal is to go out there, have a solid, top-5 finish, and if possible, contend for the win,” he said.
