Southboston, Va. --
The region’s top NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division drivers will make the jaunt to South Boston Speedway Saturday evening for some on-track jousting with defending champion Justin Johnson.
Johnson, who claimed the 2009 NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division championship at America’s Hometown Track, has established himself as the driver to beat in the early stages of the 2010 campaign.
Johnson swept a pair of 75-lap Late Model Stock Car races last weekend, giving him three victories in four tries in the current campaign. Making that feat more impressive is the fact that the Late Model Stock Car Division car count through the first four races of the season has averaged over 21 competitors per event.
Johnson and other top competitors from throughout the region will return to South Boston Speedway Saturday for the running of the NASCAR Whelen All American Series USG Late Model 150. The featured event of the evening will be a 150-lap battle for the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division competitors. The first of four races slated for Saturday will roll off under the green flag at 7 p.m.
Johnson’s two wins last weekend vaulted him to a 31-point lead over Deac McCaskill in the chase for the 2010 championship at South Boston Speedway. Stacy Puryear is third in the standings, just two points ahead of fourth-place Nick Smith.
In addition to the 150-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division event, there will also be races Saturday night for the Limited Sportsman Division drivers, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division competitors and the Southern Vintage Modified Division.
Tommy Peregoy leads Justin Snow by three points in the Limited Sportsman Division standings, while Randy Hupp is the Budweiser Pure Stock Division points leader by 13 over Joe Allred and 15 over Daniel Crews.
Pit registration will begin at noon on Saturday. Practice for all divisions will be held from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:15 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. Adult admission is $10. Children, ages 7-12, admitted for $5 and children six and under admitted free with a paying adult.
