Orange County Speedway News
Craig Moore Wins First of the Year at OCS
Apr 12, 2010 - updated Apr 12th, 2010 8:15am
Web posted by Ken Childs

Rougemont, NC --

It was a clear, cool night at Orange County Speedway, but the action was hot and heavy throughout the evening. Eight divisions ran a total of 342 laps, and at the end of the night Craig Moore was the big winner.

Jeb Burton was the fast qualifier, but with the redraw had to start third. That would be the beginning of a rough evening for the Halifax County driver. Lap 2 saw Burton and previous race winner Bruce Anderson make contact, with Anderson spinning and hitting the wall hard, ending his night early. Six laps later, contact between Burton and Timberlake’s Tracey Chambers would bring out the second caution of the night. Both drivers would be able to continue. Lap 34 would see Burton get in more trouble, this time with Paul Bryant. Contact with Bryant would bring out the third caution, and effectively end Burton’s night with front-end troubles.

Bryant qualified sixth, but redrew the pole, with Terry Dease starting on his outside. Bryant had a less than desirable start, with Terry Dease taking advantage. Dease would lead until lap 31, when Craig Moore would complete a pass that was 15 laps in the making. The Rougemont driver showed the patience of a seasoned veteran, waiting until he had a solid run on Dease to push the issue. Ten laps of side-by-side racing later, and Moore was the leader.

Moore would lead for the remaining 69 laps, with Terry Dease unable to make a move for the lead despite late cautions on laps 84 and 90 respectively. Dease would hold off Joey Mahanes for second, with Mahanes finishing third. Angier’s Zachary Marks would finish fourth and Paul Bryant fifth. The win moves Moore into the point lead, followed closely by Terry Dease and Paul Bryant.

2008 Limited Sportsman champion Brian Cole had the fast lap in qualifying, but would have to start on the outside of row 1, behind Justin Newlin. A first-lap spin sent point leader Jerry Hinesley to the rear of the field, restarting in 13th. The restart would be Newlin’s only chance to make it past Cole, and Newlin was unable to take advantage.

While the leaders fought for position, Hinesley worked his way through the field to fourth place. A late caution would give him one more shot at a podium finish, but Apex’s Donald Brace was able to hold him back for the third place finish. Cole would lead every lap Saturday night, fending off Justin Newlin for the win.

In Grand Stocks, fast qualifier Keith Edwards had the luck of the draw on his side and drew the pole. Edwards would lead through three cautions, including a lap 12 caution for Tommy Adams Jr. taking a hard lick into the pit road wall. Dennis Sargent Jr. worked his way from a fifth place draw, making it past Daniel Schadt for second place. A late charge thanks to a Daniel Schadt spin would give Sargent one last shot at Edwards , but Edwards used a late restart to stay ahead of Sargent and take the second win of 2010. Schadt would come back to finish third, with Harold Sumney and Brad Hancock rounding out the top five.

Jarrett Milam was the fast qualifier in Pure Stocks, and would start from the outside of row one after the redraw. A dreadful start by pole-sitter Derrick Easter would give Milam all of the space he needed to pull ahead. A couple of late cautions would give Jack Milam two shots at his son Jarrett, but the younger Milam was too much, leading all of the laps and winning his first race of 2010. Jack Milam finished second, with Chase Sandefur overcoming a late spin to finish third.

In a 50 lap Allison Legacy Series event, pole-sitter Gus Dean fell to second early, but a lap 36 Tyler Hill spin allowed Dean to retake the lead. Dean would lead the final 14 caution-plagued laps to win the second Allison Legacy Series race of 2010. Hunter Devers came across the line second, with Justin Allison edging Tyler Speer by nose to finish third.

The Southern Ground Pounders combined their Modified and Sportsman divisions for their 25 lap race. Daryl Gwynn pulled out to a sizeable lead early, but it was Gerry Scott making a late pass for the overall win, with Gwynn and Robert Isley finishing second and third in Open Modified. In the Sportsman class, Tommy Buxton led flag to flag, holding off a late charge by Bill Webb.

Kyle Beattie held off Cody Humphreys and Jimmy Heavlow in a three-wide battle on the final lap of the race to win in Legends. In Bandoleros, Calvin Meadows edged Garrett Biggers and Tate Fogleman, leading every lap from the pole.

Racing action returns April 24 to the high banks of Orange County Speedway with the Pro All-Star Series super late model tour in action for the first of two 2010 dates. Tickets are $20 at the gate, but fans can find discounted admission on the Orange County Speedway website.

The Orange County Speedway Late Models will be back May 8 with a full night of racing. Also in action will be the Rolling Thunder Modifieds, Limited Sportsman, Grand Stock, Pure Stock, and Southern Ground Pounders, as well as the Mini Stocks and Extreme Lightning divisions. Tickets for the May 8 event, are $10 for adults, $8 for students 17 and under, with kids 10 and under free.
