Swaim Gets Early Season Victory in Twins, Takes Points Lead at Caraway
Mar 26, 2010 - updated Mar 26th, 2010 8:07am
Web posted by

High Point, NC --

(March 25, 2010) -- On the second race of the 2009 season, Travis Swaim and his Ronald Fox led team picked up their first win, from there they went on to win the track championship.

Turn the page to 2010 and Swaim was able to race from the eighth starting position in the season's second feature race for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car division at Caraway Speedway to pick up his first win of the new season. Swaim and his team decided to try something new in qualifying and when it didn't work for them they ended up starting in the eighth position.

Swaim was determined not to let that hold him back and when the green flag dropped, the veteran driver began making moves quickly, picking up several spots in the first lap. From there he worked his way to the second position as he picked off the cars ahead of him one by one and by the time the 75-lap race had wound down to 15-laps to go, he was on the bumper of the leader.

From there he kept pressure on the leader until there were seven laps to go when he worked his way to the inside of the leader and grabbed the lead for the first time in the race. Swaim, once in the lead held his ground and held off all challengers to pick up his first victory of the season in his Pistone LTO Chassis powered by a Clark's Racing Engine and setup consultation from Mercer Race Car Engineering.

"We tried something in qualifying and it didn't work at all, that buried us back in eighth and in the 75 lap race we knew we'd have an uphill battle," said Swaim. "But, you know this team never gives up and neither do I, once the green flag dropped I knew I had a great car and was able to put the car anywhere I wanted it to go. Once I got to the leader, Brad(Brinkley) I felt like we could get around him and we did as it seemed he started to tighten up as the run went on."

Swaim's charge from eighth to first in the first of twin 75-lap races was a great accomplishment, but the wear it put on his tires proved to be a huge challenge for the second twin race. After the invert of the top eight for the second race, Swaim found himself in eighth position again and it was going to be extremely hard to make up the seven positions needed to get back to victory lane.

With his hands full with worn tires from his run from eighth, Swaim began the second race in eighth again and this time would only be able to get back to the fourth position before the checkered flag fell, but continued a great start to the 2010 season and his run for the track points championship.

"Ronald(Fox) and the guys gave me a great car for the first race, but after our qualifying issues, we had to run the car harder in the first race than we wanted to and that cost us the chance of being in the mix for the second race tonight," commented Swaim.

Swaim's great start to the 2010 season finds him already with a victory and atop of the tracks point standings with three races completed in the first two weekends of the year. Swaim will be off this weekend and then will be doing double duty as he travels to Tri-County Motor Speedway for the season opening race on Friday, April 2nd and then will be in action again at Caraway on Saturday, April 3rd.
