Asheboro, NC --

NC State Champion Travis Swaim Wins; Ryan Rhodes Ends His Winless Streak At Caraway Speedway

March 22, 2010

The night racing began Saturday Night at Caraway Speedway featuring twin 75 lap events for the Nascar Late Model Stocks.  Rookie Cory Donley of Charlotte posted the fastest qualifying lap earning him the $100 BUD Pole Award.  Robert Tyler of High Point would take the lead on the start but would blow his engine on the front stretch leading all 18 cars across the line.  When the smoke cleared, Tyler was parked in turn two and the field of cars managed to get through the smoke & oil without incident.  In the end Three-Time Track Champion and reigning NC State Champion Travis Swaim of High Point took home the win.
In victory lane he drew from chips to decide how many cars would be inverted for the second 75 lapper.  “Eighth.  That is going to be tough to come back from eighth and win again.  We already have 75 laps on these tires, I have a good car and a great team, so we will give it our best.”  Stated Swaim.
Jason York of Reidsville, Brad Brinkley of Sanford, Randy Benson of Rockingham, Dan Moore of Bear Creek, Ryan Wilson of Randleman, Donley, Ryan Rhodes of Sanford, Harrison Rhodes of High Point and Sherman Davis Jr of Fayetteville rounded out the top ten finishers.
In the second 75 Lap Late Model Stock event Rhodes started on the pole and lead from flag to flag.  York was running a strong second and closing on Rhodes but would have to pit with six to go due to a flat tire.
Rhodes returned to victory lane after a long winless streak. When asked about his last win he stated  “It’s been 3 or 4 years maybe longer.  It’s been so long I can’t remember when I last won.  I was driving my guts out.  They told me to keep my eyes out front and drive as hard as you can. With the 18 , 21 & 24 right behind you, I knew I had to drive hard.  We were actually gonna load up and go home after our clutch broke in practice.  Adam and my team worked hard to get it fixed so we could race.”  Stated Rhodes about his win.
Wilson, Benson, Swaim, Brinkley, Moore, Pete Stewart of Archdale, Jimmy Wallace of Reedy Creek, York and Preston McGhee of VA rounded out the top ten finishers.
In the 30 Lap Limited Late Model event defending track champion Josh Lowder of Archdale took home the win over second place finishers Gary Ledbetter of Lexington.  Junior Kendrick of Thomasville, Dan Discepoli of Greensboro and Ross Dalton of Greensboro rounded out the top five finishers.
In the 25 Lap Legends event defending track champion Keven Wood of Stuart, VA captured the win.  Brandon McKenzie of Asheboro, Jan Ingram of Asheboro, Travis Braden and Jason Austin of High Point rounded out the top five finishers.
In the 20 Lap Custom Steel Fabricators Super Mini Truck event Glenn Chriscoe Jr of Randleman took home the win.  Scottie York of Asheboro, Wade Turner of Asheboro, Wesley Farmer of Randleman and Bobby Smith of Lexington rounded out the top five finishers.
In the 20 Lap Pure Stock event Perry Hanes was declared the winner after the flagged winner Dave Hammond of Asheboro refused to go through technical inspection.  Darrin Free of Sophia finished second.
In the 15 Lap U-Car event Zack Bralley of Asheboro took home the win. Keith Owens of Lexington, Kyler Owens of Lexington, Richard Jones of Archdale and Allen Vance of Randleman rounded out the top five finishers.
Next Saturday Night the new Nascar Whelen All-American Series Sportsman’s will take to the asphalt for 60 laps of action.  Also on hand will be Twin 25 lap events for the Late Model Super Trucks.  Legends, Mini Stocks and Street Stock will also compete.  Grandstands open at 6pm and the racing gets way under the lights at 8pm.  For more information contact the speedway office at 336-629-5803.Directions:  Take US 220 Bypass to the Spero Road Exit and Follow the signs.  For additional information hit the web at www.carawayspeedway.com.
